Claire had served the same elderly customer every Friday for nearly two years. He always ordered coffee and toast, but he seemed to know strange details about her life and her late mother.

Then the man left his wallet behind at the cafe. When Claire opened it to find his name, she saw a photograph that changed everything.

Claire stood alone beside the cafe counter, holding a brown leather wallet that a customer had left behind.

She had opened it only to find a name or phone number. Instead, a faded photograph slipped from one of the inside pockets.

Claire picked it up and froze.

The young woman in the picture had shorter hair and a wider smile, but there was no mistake.

It was Claire’s mother.
